Zoom and Zoom Safety

Overnight Zoom has become a household word. To put their growth in context, they went from 10 million daily meeting participants to 200 million.

As a result of this rapid growth, they are experiencing challenges on all fronts – especially security – that they did not anticipate. While Zoom is working to mitigate security concerns (see link below for full article what Zoom is doing), the majority of Zoom bombing attacks appear not to be the product of flaws in Zoom’s code, but rather the users imperfect command of Zoom’s privacy settings.

Here are a couple of things you need to know:

  • When you share your meeting link on social media or other public forums, that makes your event extremely public. ANYONE with the link can join your meeting.
  • Avoid using your Personal Meeting ID (PMI) to host public events. Your PMI is basically one continuous meeting and you don’t want random people crashing your personal virtual space.
  • The Waiting Room allows the host to control who comes and goes in a Zoom session.
  • Using Registration, Passwords, and Authentication requires the attendee to identify themselves and confirm their credentials in order to participate in the meeting.
  • Familiarizing yourself with Zoom’s settings and features will help you understand how to protect your virtual space.

As you venture into the virtual world be sure to protect your virtual space.

YOUR CHALLENGE:  For those that already know how to Zoom, review your security defaults. If you are new to Zoom, educate yourself and welcome to the virtual world.
